Happy Friday + Sneak Peek

A lil glimpse into an illustration project I am working on for a band. Really excited about this one as it’s pushing me in a new direction (and the subject matter is so dang fun). Have a great weekend!

I love sketching out hand type ideas on my big old chalkboard. But sometimes the scale throws me off and is too large for what I am working on… Just discovered these white charcoal pencils (um, where have I been?) that pretty much look and act like chalk on black paper, smudges and all. My new fave tool-of-the-trade. Find them here.

And yes, I doodle my own initials like a kid in junior high. Or I can claim it’s the start of an alphabet and I got distracted. Going with the latter!

Aye, Aye, Captain

A lil customization goes a long way. A friend spotted my sailboat cards and asked me to change “Happy Birthday” to “Captain Dave” in honor of her father who loves to sail (Love that idea, KM!) Just wrapped up a boxed set of 12 for her… the perfect Father’s Day gift. Which reminds me that I’ve gotta get on it for my own dad’s gift (Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19th this year)!

My Kind of Town

Scored this vintage Chicago pennant for Pf from ebay… was relieved that it was not a mini-me version like my sister’s grad gift. It’s technically for the University of Chicago but I love how it can represent the city as well. Super simple; it’s one of my faves.

P.S. Today’s post is all about Midwest love but what coast suits you best? Weigh in over at coco + kelley

Little Deuce Coupe

My obsession with The Beach Boys continues… Maybe it’s because they were one of my first concerts as a kid. Or maybe it’s because of their guest appearance on Full House in the ’90s (I know you remember that episode). Regardless, their music is 100% summer.

Just picked up this album… I got home and realized they are wearing the same outfits + holding the same surfboard as my other album. That’s what I call maximizing a photo shoot! Nice work, guys.

Have a great weekend!

Was recently given a set of MUJI colored pencils as a gift… A reminder of just how beautiful/simple/pure their designs + packaging are. Spent some time in the MUJI section of the MoMA store this spring. You walk in there and boom, an hour goes by. The brand’s restraint is really inspiring. You can buy the pencils here.

Last photo: I pulled together a few other things in my stash that complement the natural colors of MUJI. Clockwise starting at the top: bag that my new CXXVI anchor necklace arrived in (love), vintage Seneca Lake postcard (hometown pride!), anchor stamp from Paper Source, leather string from Smith & Chang in Jersey City (a must-visit shop), lil kraft bags, MUJI info card + pencils.

Field Trip

Took a quick break today after a long couple of days of deadline-cramming (project completed, yay!). Headed out to Pine Street in Burlington which is endlessly inspiring… It’s filled with old warehouses that have been converted into shops, cafes, artist studios, antique stores, you name it. Ended up at  book shop. Not sure if it was the hot summer weather (my car said 96 but it likes to exaggerate) but I seemed to only buy in red, white, + blue. Don’t even get me started on the titles… Pep?! The Chance of a Lifetime? How could I not buy these.

Also, the amazing Jane of simple + pretty did a really sweet feature of my work today. Check it out here. Thank you, Jane!

P.S. Happy June 1st. Whoa.

I realized one thing (again) this morning: they don’t call ‘em deadlines for nothing. On the home stretch for a big hand hand type assignment… Super excited about it but realizing I can’t pull ye olde college all-nighter like I used to. One reason to crawl outta bed this am: my studio is featured on Brooklyn Bride today! So honored. Huge thanks to Vané! Check it out here.

Above are some sketches for the aforementioned type project. Will be able to share the final results later this summer… For now, Back. To. Work.

The official kick-off of summer is here: Memorial Day weekend. Hope everyone has some fun plans in the mix. Mine will be a lil work, a lil play, and some major cheering for all the runners in the Vermont City Marathon on Sunday. Psyched to be in Burlington this weekend. Have a good one + see you next week!

P.S. My own running regimen starts Monday. Maybe.
